Hey Everyone,

You’ve probably heard the phrase “mortgage helper” a thousand times, and it usually involves renting your basement suite to someone you found on Facebook Marketplace (fingers crossed it goes okay).

But lately, I’ve noticed something amazing happening with a few of my clients:

They're buying homes with a suite for their parents.

Not because their folks need long-term care, they definitely don’t.
Not because they’re trying to relive childhood days, no thanks.

They’re doing it because it just makes sense. Financially, emotionally, practically… all the ways that actually matter.

If your parents have been renting:

This is their chance at real stability, no more rent hikes, landlord worries, or wondering if they’ll have to move again next year. Their rent contributes to your family’s future instead of someone else’s retirement fund.

If your parents own a home:

They’re probably sitting on a nest egg, a home with decades of care poured into it, but maybe it’s too big, too expensive, or too much upkeep now. Selling and moving into your suite frees up equity and gives them a comfortable space that’s just right.

But it’s the little things that really make this arrangement rad:

  • Peace of mind when you’re away.
Imagine leaving for work knowing someone you trust is home, noticing the leaking dishwasher before it floods your kitchen (and saving you from a fight with insurance).

  • Someone to tend to the garden.
There’s just something about parents and gardening, they see weeds no one else notices, and somehow turn your garden into a chicken pot pie. For many who work at the mines the last thing they want to do on their off days is tend to the yard. Their parents on the other hand love doing just that.

  • Easier living for all.
They’re not ready for a long-term care home, and neither are you. They’re your biggest fans, after all, and this setup gives them (and you) the right balance of privacy and closeness, like when family was simpler, and home felt easy.

The truth is, we spend years building our own lives, sometimes far from the people who built us. This trend of families joining forces under one roof again, comfortably, conveniently, is something I think we can all get behind.

If this sounds like something that might work for you, let’s chat. I’d love to help you figure out how to make it work for your family.

-Andrew
