It’s Friday, hunting season is well underway, and a lot of people around here are getting ready to head back out for another very early morning tomorrow.
Hit Tim’s/McDs then head up the Bull in the dark or over up Sunrise Creek before sunrise or my favourite spot, Notellem Creek, and then all the time in the world to sit alone and think.
Sometimes a little too much time.
At home, it’s easy to keep your brain busy. There’s work, TV, emails and an endless supply of bad news on your phone. If an uncomfortable question shows up, you can usually find something to distract yourself with before it finishes the sentence.
That gets harder in the bush.
There isn’t much doom-scrolling when you’re waiting for a bull you can hear somewhere in the distance. Or at least you think it’s a bull. It could be Steve again. He’s been answering your calls for twenty minutes and seems very pleased with himself.
Either way, you’re sitting there quietly with nowhere else to be, and that’s usually when the questions you’ve been avoiding decide to join you.
Should I sign the renewal offer the bank sent me? Can we still afford to move next spring? What happens if the payment goes up again? Could we help the kids buy a place? Have we waited too long?
Funny how your brain saves those questions until you are halfway up a mountain, before daylight, with nobody around who can answer them.
The woods are a great place to think. They are a terrible place to sort out a mortgage.
Most of these questions don’t need an entire weekend of thought. They need the right numbers and a ten-minute conversation with someone who knows what to look at. Sometimes the answer is simple. Sometimes there is a problem, but there are more ways through it than you expected. Sometimes the answer is that there is nothing to do yet and you can stop worrying about it for a while.
The point isn’t to give you more mortgage information to think about while you’re out there. It’s to get the question out of your head before you go.
